“I used to stand right behind the goalpost and watch the goalkeeper. Ninety percent of my focus was on him.”
It started in 1999, in Standard 7th. I had just moved from a small school to the biggest and oldest school in town: lush green grounds, and a whole campus crazy about football. After tuition I would walk alone to the district league stadium across the road and stand behind the goal, studying every keeper: where he stood, how he dived, how he caught.
Then I got my chance in the school junior team. I practised every day on that soft lawn grass and found a goalkeeper's instinct I never knew I had: to fly, roll and slide. I won the school's best goalkeeper award more than once, then kept goal as first-choice keeper for CGI and Wells Fargo in corporate tournaments, winning best goalkeeper at both.
Football never stopped, until COVID did. In 2022 I looked for a game in Electronic City Phase 2 and found no one. Then a new turf opened at Gold Coin Club Resort. I started reaching out: one player, then two, then ten. Today Gold Hawks is 100+ members strong, playing every Saturday and Sunday, and has touched more than 200 players.
Every state, every language, every background. Seasoned or complete beginner, everyone is welcome. We play for fun, for fitness, for the love of the game, and for each other.
